PJM Interconnection – Regional Grid Operator

What is PJM? 

PJM is a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) regulated Regional Transmission Organization (RTO). PJM is headquartered in Pennsylvania and coordinates the transmission and sale of wholesale electricity in all or parts of 13 states and the District of Columbia. PJM manages the bulk transmission system and administers wholesale markets for electricity in a region serving over 65 million people. 

PJM is a voluntary, member-driven organization that facilitates a comprehensive stakeholder process, often open to public participation. PJM uses a stakeholder process called the Consensus Based Issue Resolution (CBIR) Process to collaboratively develop solutions with input from stakeholders. This process is founded on the principle that collective input produces better outcomes. While it can be time-intensive and complex, it typically achieves solutions with widespread stakeholder backing.

PJM manages a generator interconnection queue, enabling resources to apply for connection to the regional grid. Requests are grouped into project clusters and studied to determine whether network upgrades are needed to accommodate the new resources.
