MAREC Action recently sat down to chat with Tony Soruco, a clean energy business leader and our Board Vice-President. Tony serves as one of four members of MAREC’s Executive Team. He brings a wealth of experience to our organization, and we wanted to learn more about his background and how he supports MAREC.

Question: Can you tell us a bit about your experience prior to your current role?

I got my start in energy policy at PR Quinlan Associates, a consulting firm that introduced me to the fast-moving world of state-level energy decision-making. From there, I joined WGL Energy, a retail energy supplier serving residential, commercial, and industrial customers across the Mid-Atlantic. At WGL, I represented the company before state Public Service Commissions and in state legislatures, gaining hands-on experience in both regulatory and legislative advocacy. That role gave me a front-row seat to how energy policy gets made — and deepened my commitment to helping shape it.

Question: Explain a little bit about your current role at RWE.

RWE is the third-largest renewable energy developer, owner, and operator in the United States, with more than 11 gigawatts of clean energy projects across the country. As electricity demand continues to rise, RWE is investing in a diverse portfolio of wind, solar, and energy storage to help power the grid of the future. I manage the company’s state-level government affairs along the Eastern Seaboard — including the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, and provide support in the Southeast. In this role, I help RWE navigate complex policy environments to ensure that clean energy projects can move forward and deliver benefits to communities, consumers, and the grid.

Question: What led you to get involved with our MAREC, and what drew you to the role of Board Vice President?

I was drawn to MAREC because of its reputation as a trusted and pragmatic voice in state capitols across the Mid-Atlantic. The organization has built strong relationships with governors, legislators, and key stakeholders, making it a highly effective advocate for clean energy. Serving as Vice President gave me the chance to support MAREC’s talented team and contribute as a utility player – stepping in wherever needed—whether filling gaps, launching new initiatives, or finding opportunities for member companies to strengthen and expand the organization’s impact.

Question: What is one thing that people would be surprised to learn about you?

Over the past couple of years I picked up playing ice hockey without ever learning how to previously skate.
